PARIS FASHION WEEK S/S2010 – BALENCIAGA
After last season's feminine draping, Nicolas Ghesquière returns for Spring/Summer to his own evocation of sleek futurism. Hooded leather sleeveless jackets, paired with the Ghesquière signature skin tight, panelled trousers propagated a hard-edged slant on the look, whereas thick banded and elasticated waists, coupled with sleeveless go-faster stripes captured the sportiness that has been infiltrating many of the big name shows.
Nicolas's masterful play with print extended to painterly examples upon trousers and skirts, a pattern echoed in the appliqued waistcoats, re-instated the skill with pattern and print, partiularly tribal, that characterised Nicolas's initial seasons at Balenciaga. Sheer chiffon shirts and dresses, panelled with alternating sheer and leather patches, bought evening wear options, and the shoes - woven open toed boots occasionally laced - rounded up a collection which felt like a greatest hits of sorts whilst - as always with Ghesquière, bringing something new to the arena.
