Paris Fashion Week S/S2010 - Junya Watanabe

PARIS FASHION WEEK S/S2010 – JUNYA WATANABE

Much like Yohji Yamamoto and in a distinct departure from his dramatic, softly scultpural A/W 09 collection, Junya Watanabe presented a collection revolving around the simplest of basics; the suit and the skirt. Alternating interpretations came thick and fast as a single breasted two-buttoned blazer with a softly scooping neckline was proceeded by a sharp shouldered double-breasted number, all angular lapels and cinched waists.

Floor length corseted coats evolved into suits of the same cuts, a peplum-esque kick imbuing the masculine with an hourglass femininity. If the mannish tailoring and black and white wingtips presented an androgynous, gangster-style counterpart to Dior's forties film noir goddesses, a decade encompassing leap to the fifites resulted in checkerboard patterns. Cut into draped tunics, puff sleeved shirts and capes in both cropped and longer lengths, these clashed optical illusions bought an almost sporty, casual air to a collection which, as always with Junya, imaginatively reinterpreted the classics for a modern audience.
