PARIS FASHION WEEK S/S2010 – VIKTOR & ROLF
Taking a literal approach to the oh-so-woeful strains of recession mantra "cut back", Viktor & Rolk took a shears to their couture gowns. Tulle was sharply sliced at right angles, and tunelled through as if by couture hungry mice, resulting in as always with Viktor and Rolf, a delightful air of humour, and editorial ready pieces.
This refusal to succumb to fiscal woes also resounded in the more ready-to-wear pieces. Tulle again made an appearance, trimmed to accentuate a collar and hips, on lapels and juxtaposing a mannishly tailored blazer with airy ruffles. What better way to ride the financial tide than by producing undeniably saleable pieces? A peach tuxedo jacket with black trim which evolved into an undulating, rusched strapless tube dress, and further into a clash of masculine and feminine as moto jacket shoulders crowned a flightily feminine nude tuxedo number, will appeal to those far and beyond Viktor and Rolf's core customer.
With so many designers returning - drably - to their core values to weather the financial storm, leave it to Viktor and Rolf to do so in a humorous, joyful manner, resulting in a collection which will - both emotionally and comercially - banish such concerns.
