PARIS FASHION WEEK S/S2010 – CHRISTIAN DIOR

The show notes promised "a new siren" divulged directly from film noir, and John Galliano did not disappoint, parading a bevvy forties inspired beauties down the catwalk. Miniature trenches rendered in in patent black, sheening bronze and undulating satins evoked an air of Bardot-esque femme fatale. Floor length sheer gowns expanded to - in an evolution of last season's  couture collection - lingerie-wear with sheer slips revealing satin tap shorts, slips, corsets and bras, and lace nightgowns.

Though executed in a palette of vibrant indigos and hot pinks, tempered by black the collection exuded a sophisticated rather than explicitly sexual sensuality. Finale dresses - in delicate chiffons of orange, blood red and hot pink and again granting the occasional glance of underwear - fulfilled the required eveningwear quota and - as Galliano took his bow decked in full 40s gangster regalia - look set to elevate today's screen sirens to a sophistication tantamount to that elapsed era.
