LONDON FASHION WEEK A/W2011-12 - CASSETTE PLAYA

Forever enmeshed with the dawn and death of Nu Rave, Cassette Playa’s return to the catwalk, at a time when scally sportswear and roughed up Bloods are truly infiltrating high-end, felt appropriate, nigh-on overdue. Charged with the title “Carni cannibal palace” and steeped in a narrative “where gangs of thugs roam the street”, a pounding metal soundtrack gave way to the bass rumble of grime.

In aural accordance, - Mundane pooled the two, the rude boy and the rebel no longer warring but heterogeneous. Matted rats tails topped boxy rock and roll bikers in Napa leather which came emblazoned with graffiti embroidery and appliqué and contrast sleeve denim jackets, amplified with neon lights slogans across inflated arms. Eighties hair metal flames licked elasticated joggers whilst leather shirting was elevated from discontent with nubby, raw wool sleeves in raspberry pink.

With Mundane’s tale of debauchery centred upon the always gray-days of British sea-side towns, stick-of-rock heritage informed combatant tweaks of aristocratic staples. Tackling knitwear for the first time, classic cables twisted across a swagged hoodie whilst horse and hound quilted Lavenhams came hooded and stamped with swirling, coral and black camo. A blood red duffel, piped in tangerine gold and a cable knit cricket sweater, traditional stripes inverted to cerise and Yves Klein, rounded out a rebel yell at the stolid and stoic.

Post Barbie and Ken interlude of gold painted bodies, Krysten square heads and sleazy rose dotted loungewear in slippery silk, Mundane’s boys – and a few mulled headed maidens in second skin dresses – strolled out together; Strength in numbers.
