CHRISTIAN LACROIX COUTURE 2010
With the house lanquishing in the financial doldrums, many have suggested that Christian Lacroix’s autumn/winter 09 couture show may well be his last. Left with a team of just twelve and a minute budget Lacroix presented an understandably pared down collection in black and midnight blue which lacked the colour and print of his former couture collections. Nonetheless, such creativity and vision as Lacroix’s is impossible to restrain, as evidenced by the pieces themselves.
A focus upon tailoring and silhouette expressed itself in a matador-inspired black tweed cape coat, embellished with crystal buttons, classically Parisienne pieces finished with fur, and evening wear which ranged from a simple Grecian look to a tiered ballerina skirt, and some exquisite lace, taffeta and pearl pieces.
The finale gown in a relief from the black and blue of the other pieces, together with its dramatic headdress and extravagant embellishment, evoked an image of a sainted bride and concluded the show with a defiant indication of Lacroix’s resounding desire to weather the financial storm. Here’s hoping he’s able to make next season; Lacroix forever indeed.
