Jean Paul Gaultier Couture 2010

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER COUTURE 2010
Inspired by old Hollywood, Gaultier sent a slew of screen sirens down the catwalk. A classic black leather trench with exaggerated shoulders recalled Brigette Bardot,a fragile blue chiffon gown juxtaposed with silver body armour a Bodicean female warrior, and sequinned minidresses hemmed to resemble molten gold and teamed with luxurious fur were undeniably flapper in spirit.

Such a range of influences could appear slightly schizophrenic if not held together by Gaultier's dedication to the abundant luxury of couture, evidenced in the sheer tactility of the pieces. Standout looks included a crocodile skin overall paired with both fur and feathers, a brown leather patchwork dress complete with cone bra - surely a reference to Gaultier's work with Madonna, an icon akin to the starlets that paraded the catwalk - paired with feather tights which could translate the opulence of the collection to street level.

As Catherine pointed out yesterday, whilst other houses may have opted for simpler, less opulent couture shows, it's nice to see that Gaultier has maintained the true couture spirit.
