PARIS FASHION WEEK S/S2010 – GARETH PUGH
Eschewing the stark black and white of previous collections, Gareth Pugh for Spring/Summer instead presented a more delicate palette of greys and navys. This change in palette resulted in simpler, more subtle pieces, suggesting that where other designers have adopted Gareth's sharp-shouldered strong aesthetic, he has in turn rebuffed such an image, instead carving a new line in softer shapes.
Tail coats in dove grey - cinched at the waist and exploding from sharply corseted structure into Gareth's singature billowing triangular cut motif - sleek panelled dresses, and airy striped tube numbers all replete with high necks, signalled this new mood. Slashed, torn and laced floor length gowns paired with snoods, and long sleeved body conscious pieces - the motif continuing to slashed trousers and standout grey and black leather lace-up boots - conjured an air of macabre Victoriana filtered through Gareth's futurist spectrum.
With feathered headpieces maintaining the delicious theatrics of his previous collections, Gareth's collection showcased the sophisticated evolution of his own aesthetic, resulting in an - as always - directional, and, in this instance, concurrently saleable collection.
